Serving with Honor. Protecting with Compassion.

About CHFD

Volunteers have protected Cockrell Hill since 1937. Today we are a city-operated department of dedicated professionals from all backgrounds, and we all serve to protect our community.

Our city

Cockrell Hill is a small city of a little over half a square mile in Dallas County, completely surrounded by the City of Dallas. It has its own city hall, police department, and fire department.

Because Cockrell Hill is small, our firefighters are part of the neighborhoods they protect. You will see us at local schools, businesses, and community events, not only on emergency calls.

Mission

Everything we do is guided by a simple promise to our community.

“To protect lives and property in our community by providing quality service through innovation, professionalism, and diversity.”

Home of the Smoke Bandits

Our firefighters created the Smoke Bandits emblem to give our station its own identity. It carries our four core values, Life, Duty, Honor, and Compassion, on the arms of the Maltese cross.

Our history

Firefighters have looked after Cockrell Hill since 1937, when residents formed a volunteer fire department. For decades those volunteers protected the city, even though the department was not an official part of city government. In 2018 we were reorganized as a city-operated department, and today we are a team of dedicated professionals from all backgrounds. We all serve to protect our community.

Leadership

Volunteer is our pay status, not our skill level

We believe the quality of your protection should never depend on whether a responder is paid or volunteer. Our department is made up of professional public servants who choose to serve Cockrell Hill, and we hold ourselves to the same standards as other DFW fire departments.

We invest heavily in our team. Every fire suppression member holds at least Basic Firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, the same certification held by career firefighters across the state. Our medical personnel are certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services as Emergency Care Attendants, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Paramedics.

We train and operate by national best practices, using the National Incident Management System for command and NFPA standards for safety and equipment. When you call us, you get a professional, disciplined team prepared for complex scenarios.

The Fire House

In June 2019, thanks to the strong support of our city leadership and citizens, we opened the doors to the Fire House at 1005 Phinney Avenue. It is more than a building. It is our promise to serve Cockrell Hill for generations to come.

The Fire House at 1005 Phinney Avenue is our administrative office and the living quarters for our firefighters. Our fire apparatus is housed in the fire bay at City Hall.
