Firefighters have looked after Cockrell Hill since 1937, when residents formed a volunteer fire department. For decades those volunteers protected the city, even though the department was not an official part of city government. In 2018 we were reorganized as a city-operated department, and today we are a team of dedicated professionals from all backgrounds. We all serve to protect our community.
In June 2019, thanks to the strong support of our city leadership and citizens, we opened the doors to the Fire House at 1005 Phinney Avenue. It is more than a building. It is our promise to serve Cockrell Hill for generations to come.
We are ready for more than just fires. Our department provides a safety net for the whole city.
When the alarm rings, our crews mobilize immediately.
From a burning car to a driver trapped after a crash, our crews are equipped to respond.
In a medical emergency, seconds count. As a licensed First Responder Organization, our crews are often the first on scene.
The safest fire is the one that never happens.
National Night Out is our biggest event of the year. We also visit local schools and take part in community and business events across Cockrell Hill throughout the year.
We want every child in Cockrell Hill to know that firefighters are here to help, and every neighbor to know who is coming when they call 911.

Know two ways out of every room and where everyone will meet outside.
Cooking and home heating are leading causes of home fires. A few habits lower the risk.
Can responders find your home? City code requires address numbers on the structure that are plainly legible from the street, at least 4 inches tall, and contrasting with their background. Source: Code Enforcement FAQ
We are a training ground for future career firefighters and a home for dedicated professionals who want to serve their community. “Volunteer” defines our pay status, not our skill level: every fire suppression member holds at least Basic Firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
Firefighter applicants must hold at least one of these credentials:
Applicants without either credential can apply as Operations Support Personnel. About Operations Support
